A normal day in a 13-year-old’s life goes something like this…
7:00 am – Wake up 7:15 am – Wakey wakey… 7:30 am – WAKE UP DAMN IT..! 7:55 am – Breakfast + Rush to school 8:10 am – Late to school 4:00 pm – Back home. 4:45 pm – Out with friends… Hello? Friends? 6:15 pm – Homework (*cough cough*) 8:45 pm – EARLY dinner 9:30 pm – TV 11:30 pm – Sleep
Not very inspiring, if I say so myself. In fact, this has become more of a routine than anyone can imagine. If we were to make the slightest change, the whole system would collapse…
Now, we all have different experiences of the value of routine. For the vast majority of us, routine helps us cope with the continual flow of decisions in everyday life.
The harsh truth of why decision-making is so difficult in the first place is that most of us are extremely bad decision-makers. The truth is that we often have only the slimmest idea of what we want, meaning even the simplest of decisions can leave us befuddled. Routine makes everything that little bit easier and saves us time for the more essential aspects of our lives…
This brings me back to the point I would have liked to make in the first place; a teenager’s life is filled with decisions… about friends, careers, and so much more. I mean, friendships in childhood are usually a matter of chance, whereas in teenagehood they are most often a matter of choice.
These very decisions are among the most important they will ever make in their life. And as Aristotle, the Greek philosopher once said, “Good choices made in youth make all the difference.”
Teenagers are just people trying to learn how to make it among the adults in the world, who are probably not so sure themselves.
So for all of you teens out there, remember that teenagehood is an amazing and hard time. You find the best friendships and face the worst heartbreaks… but stick to a routine that works for you and balances out the relaxation and the hard, hard work. And above all, make decisions you won’t ever regret and will thank yourself for later.
So keep your head down, do your best, and for God’s sake HAVE FUN!
